The SLINGPROM™ was developed to fill a gap in the shoulder rehabilitation process, namely,  Passive Range of Motion (PROM).

(PROM) is an important phase of Rehab that provides joint lubrication and nutrition while helping to elongate collagen fibers necessary for proper joint motion. 

While most (PROM) is provided by the patient's therapist manually, it often difficult to get the patient to relax.  When a patient is in pain, he or she often subconsciously "Guards" the injured area.

This guarding actually INCREASES activation of the very shoulder muscles we are trying Not to activate.  This leads to more pain and then more guarding.

Q.  What kind of shoulder problems does the SLINGPROM® help**?

Any Shoulder condition that would benefit from (PROM) such as:

Q.  What is The SLINGPROM® ?

The SLINGPROM® is a patented device that you add to a standard shoulder pulley that allows the pulley to provide Passive Range of Motion (PROM).

Q.  Why would you need a SLINGPROM®?

A typical shoulder pulley is traditionally utilized for Active Assisted Range of Motion (AAROM).  However, there are many therapists and physicians who use a standard pulley for (PROM). 

This is controversial, and evidence does not support its use in this manner.  Dockery ET al, found that the use of standard shoulder pulleys activated 17.6% of the supraspinatus muscle vs 8.7% using (AAROM) with a bar and 5% with manual (PROM) or CPM use.*

Q.  How is the SLINGPROM® different than a standard shoulder pulley ?

With a standard shoulder pulley, you must grip the handle.  As you grip you contract the muscles in your forearm, then upper arm and then the muscles in your shoulder.  At best, this is Active Assisted Range of Motion (AAROM), at worst, it's Active Range of Motion (AROM).  For many surgeries, and Frozen shoulder, early (AAROM) or (AROM) is not ideal.

The Red indicated above illustrates the reverse overflow of muscle firing.  Basically, if you grip the handle , the exercise is NO longer passive  (PROM) , but active assisted range of motion (AAROM) to active range of motion (AROM).

Q.  Why would therapists or physicans use standard pulleys?

Some don't.  They rely on standard cane exercises (AAROM) to minimize (AROM).   Therapists/physicians that use standard pulleys for (PROM) probably feel that it is  their best option.  Standard shoulder pulleys are very valuable for (AAROM) and (AROM).

Q.  How is the SLINGPROM® different from traditional shoulder Pulleys?

Traditional shoulder pulleys provide only Active range of motion (AROM) or Active assisted range of motion (AAROM).

 As indicated below, Green indicates minimal muscle activation because the injured arm is supported and relaxed!  Less activation = decreased pain and guarding = Increased (PROM)!
